Divided Tongues - What does this mean? Dale Gooding - Acts 2:1-13 https://youtu.be/ihWn-GnEgUg I) Significant OT Marks: (Observations the Jews may have made)         A) Pentecost - Lev. 23:15-22         B) Mt. Sinai - Reminiscent of God speaking to Moses on Mt. Sinai - Ex. 19:18-19         C) Babel (Gen. 11:9) - A variety of known languages - Acts 2:9-11         D) Joel’s Prophecy - Joel 2:28-29 (partial fulfillment) Transition:  But it doesn’t stop there, since Jesus has died & resurrected, we are seeing the beginning of what God has been working out for Millennia… II) Significant NT Marks:         A) Confirmation - of the Gospel Message              This unique event was miraculous & corroborative to OT prophecies & events.         B) Unification - the Universality of The Gospel to all Tongues, Tribes & Nations                1) Many Languages                2) Each able to witness to their area (upon return home)                3) The Un-Babeling- All “came together” (Acts 2:6) at the sound -         C) Undeniable - Due to its Miraculousness & Popularity (all could hear it)                1) Bewildered (Acts 2:6) = to throw (an assembly) into disorder, to perplex (the mind)                2) Astonished/Astounded (Acts 2:7, 12) = amazed, astonished, to lose one’s mind                3) Perplexed = surprised, confused (not know what to do), at a loss         D) Initiating - It brought in the beginning of the Church Age.                1) It was distinct from other comings of The Holy Spirit                2) It was to fulfill John the Baptist’s & Jesus’ teachings regarding The Holy Spirit’s arrival - Lk. 3:16; Acts 1:5 Transition:  This is simply what the text says, without fear or prejudice. Yet, it is not what we may expect by the verbiage used or what people have told us. Note lastly… III) Textual Concerns:         A) Hearers heard:                1) A sound like a mighty rushing wind - again, reminiscent of Mt. Sinai                2) Specific languages/dialects - again, reminiscent of Babel                      - Either the sound of the wind or of the excitement of the people made them come together (Acts 2:6)                3) The Mighty works of God - at Sinai the people couldn’t stand God speaking to them, Here, they are bewildered & amazed. - There is no suggestion that what was spoken was Angelic or ecstatic! - Acts 2:4 = "utterance", see Acts 26:25 - Read text w/translations (from mark-up)         B) Speakers Spoke:                1) Apostles spoke in their language - Not Angelic                2) Sign gifts have passed - ended in the 1st Century.
